| 1982 GN - missing VIN Can anybody ID this car? The VIN's been replaced and now reads 1G4GM47A1FH403998 ('85 3.8 NA Regal). Car was located in Kansas. It has some distinguishable add-ons. It had no engine, but the body is sound enough that I doubt it would be scrapped. I'd like to thank Bob Koch for mailing of CD of pictures of this car. ![]()

| To get down to the details, the whole steering column had been changed, without putting all the bolts back in. The car (to me anyway) looked like a recovered theft, or maybe a theft that had never been recovered. May have been re-vinned by thieves, or simply someone who bought it with no title or keys, and wanted to drive it. Hard to say, but if it would have had the original VIN on it still, even with no title, it would be in my backyard right now, awaiting the restoration it deserves. The guy knew what he had, so whoever bought it probably knew what they got, and didn't scrap it. A carfax on that 85 VIN might give some clues, maybe you could talk one of the guys on one of these boards into running one for free (i'd like to see it too ;) ) . There might be a name (or town) that comes up on a title search thats already on the registry. The original VIN may have already been submitted to you. I have a name and address of a former owner here but it's unlikely that they even knew it wasn't an 85. Wouldn't hurt to get in touch with them I guess. Any other ideas? I'd be willing to help with anything that comes up if I can. bob

| Re: vin Quote:
Where on the tunnel, on the top side(interior) or on the greasy side? Which fender? Is it on the sheet metal or on the frame? I have found VIN's on the frame but the body has to be lifted to read them. Also, Bob have you pulled the drivers door trim panel off? They(GM) used to put an interior build sheet taped to the lower plastic trim panel. If the door has been apart than it is most likely long gone but weirder things have been known to happen.

| The door panel had been taken off already, the back seat had been pulled up, and the underhood liner was torn up, as if someone else was looking for it. I looked all over the place for possible vin's but I think they got them all but maybe that one on the frame. I should have bought it, but I hope it ends up with someone who knows what it is and is willing to make the best of it (whatever that may be). I called the phone number I found in the trunk and it was a dead number. Are there any registered that have been stolen? Maybe someone who lost their car could ID it as theirs. I would imagine the car is floating around the KC/Topeka/Lawrence area right about now, but who knows. Was I a fool not to give $300 for it? Not much special left other than a solid body. bob

| Full of Hot Air | In the future, I would check the VIN on the frame rail. Only problem is it is a PITA to read. Just my $.02. ![]()

| I have no updates on this particular car, but I wanted to inform Rich that I stumbled across a guy on a Mopar board that used to own an 82 GN waaaaay back in the day, think he said he sold it in 94, but still has the window sticker for it. I PM'ed him and gave him your email address and directed him to your website. He said he is going to dig up what he can and send the info to you for your registry. He said it was non turbo and that the original engine crapped out and was scrapped, replaced with another 4.1. Just a heads up. I'm on the lookout for ya. bob
