rods at fault, here....Breaking the rods at the big end, is the big ?? A rod, being a member in compression, will have it's weakest point at the middle, not at the heaviest part of the beam. I'd be looking at other indicators.

Tops of the pistons.
Bearings. [Rods and mains]
Were the rods a matched set?
Stepping "up" to a better rod may not be the cure, if you don't find out what caused the problem, in the first place.
Rating a rod by "HP" is hokey, to begin with.[Advertizing hype]. Max cyl psi occurs at max torque, not max HP...
