That was not luck, it was a miracle you had the car returned with minimal loss.
Scary lesson. As stated above, you can disable the car, but nothing will stop it from being towed...
If you pursue your attempt to sell it, do not show it without a least one person with you. Unless I had quite a bit of information about a person, and at least a couple of conversations that made me feel somewhat comfortable, I never had a potential buyer come to my house to look at a car. Most of the time, I met them at the local police station....
