Wow.. I'm impressed by the results of a simple task. I just put a new belt on the GN and its friggin amazing how much quieter the engine is. I had the loudest squeeling motor I ever heard, that it was embarassing. I thought I had another noisey alternator, but that wasnt the case at all. All that squealing and squawking was the belt. It had a 64" Dayco on it, that was getting pretty old, and I just put a 63.5" Goodyear gatorback belt on it, and its quiet as a mouse. Now I can hear all the OTHER noises the engine makes!
Just figured I'd share, for any other TR rookies. If anyone has a noisey squeeling engine and assumes its an alternator or tensioner, try the belt first. (Or any females in the passenger seat..
) AutoZone can get the Goodyear belts for $25. Better style poly-cogs allow for easier flex and less stress on the belt. The solid cogs on the Daycos get all cracked up after a while, like the one on mine was. Go with the 63.5" length too. Thats actually the size that is listed for our cars in the system. Others list the longer belt, and they're usually too loose.
